NEW HYDE PARK, N.Y. (AP) - Democrats on Long Island have cancelled a major political fundraiser because the event’s venue plans to host a National Rifle Association fundraiser and gun auction.
The Nassau County Democratic Party announced Friday that it has cancelled the organization’s Oct. 22 event at the Inn at New Hyde Park.
County Democratic Chairman Jay Jacobs says the organization made the decision after learning the catering hall will host an NRA event on Sept. 27. Several schools are located near the business, and Jacobs says it’s “appalling” that the NRA would auction firearms so close to schools.
The Daily News reports hundreds of Democrats were expected at the party’s fundraiser, including Gov. Andrew Cuomo, a frequent critic of the NRA.
The restaurant’s management says it will honor its contract for the NRA event.
