The San Francisco 49ers are in need of a new quarterback after starter Jimmy Garoppolo suffered a torn ACL during Sunday’s loss against the Kansas City Chiefs.
Free agent Colin Kaepernick, however, will not be an option.
49ers coach Kyle Shanahan told reporters Monday that San Francisco isn’t interested in a reunion with Kaepernick, who spent six seasons with the franchise before opting out of his contract in 2017.
“I made that decision [to not pursue Kaepernick] because of the style of offense we wanted to go with,” Shanahan said. “That’s kind of what I said last year. It’s the same situation now. I always look into what style of offense I want to do, what style of offense we’ve been doing for the last two years.”
Kaepernick, in the midst of a legal battle against the NFL over his employment status, has not played since the 2016 season. The quarterback has claimed he is being blackballed by owners over his decision to kneel during the national anthem and protest racial inequality.
Shanahan said the 49ers are open to bringing in another arm behind C.J. Beathard, who will take over as starter, and Nick Mullens.
The 49ers plan to work out Tom Savage, Kellen Clemons and T.J. Yates — journeymen quarterbacks who have bounced around the league.
Shanahan said they extended a tryout offer to veteran quarterback Matt Moore, but the team was still awaiting a response.
