CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) - The Latest on the U.S. Senate race in Nevada (all times local):

5 p.m.

Vice President Mike Pence says U.S. Sen. Dean Heller of Nevada is a “strong, principled conservative voice” who helped repeal a requirement that most Americans buy health insurance or risk a tax penalty.

Pence said at a rally with Nevada Republicans in Carson City that Heller is also “100 percent pro-life” and “strong on borders.”

While speaking about immigration, the vice president mentioned the caravan of several thousand Central American migrants traveling toward the U.S. border and said they were coming north “just to challenge our border” and “challenge our sovereignty.”

Heller has described himself as being personally against abortion but has said in the past that he backed a woman’s right to abortion and had no problem with federal funding for Planned Parenthood. He’s also taken more moderate stances on immigration than many of his Republican colleagues.

Vice President Mike Pence is offering a prayer for the victims of the shooting at a Pittsburgh synagogue.

Pence said at a rally Saturday afternoon with Nevada Sen. Dean Heller and other Republicans in Carson City, Nevada that what happened in Pittsburgh “was not just criminal, it was evil.”

He says there is “no place in America for violence or anti-Semitism” and called the shooting an attack on innocent Americans and an assault on the Freedom of Religion.

Pence cited a Bible verse and asked the crowd at an airport hangar to “pray for the strength and wisdom to do everything in our power to bring these senseless acts of violence to an end.”

The vice president also asked the crowd to pray that Americans rise above hate and divisions.

Nevada Republican Sen. Dean Heller is spending a crucial weekend before Election Day drumming up support at a statehood parade and rally with Vice President Mike Pence in northern Nevada.

Heller spent Saturday morning at the Nevada Day celebration in his hometown of Carson City, where he appeared at a pancake breakfast and hosted a chili feed.

He also rode horseback in a cowboy hat and western style-suit in the parade.

His Democratic challenger, Rep. Jacky Rosen, was also in the parade, waving to the crowd while riding in a blue convertible.

Heller is the only Republican senator running for re-election in a state Democrat Hillary Clinton won in 2016. His race is considered one of Democrats’ best chances to flip a seat.

Pence is scheduled to rally with Heller in a hangar at the Carson City airport.
