ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - Tens of thousands of New Yorkers will get to enjoy Thanksgiving meals delivered to their homes thanks to three supermarket chains and a national trade group.
Gov. Andrew Cuomo says the state has partnered with Walmart, Rochester-based Wegmans, New York City-based Gristedes (grih-STEE’-deez) and the Queens-based National Supermarket Association to provide meals this week to more than 40,000 people statewide.
The Democrat is asking all New Yorkers to find ways to offer a helping hand to those in need this holiday season.
The supermarkets involved in the project have joined with the national trade association to package Thanksgiving turkeys for delivery statewide.
State officials say Walmart, the nation’s largest grocer, donated more than $27 million across New York state in cash and in-kind donations last year to fight against hunger.
