MIDDLETOWN, Conn. (AP) - Police across Connecticut are preparing for another “Click It or Ticket” campaign aimed at enforcing the state’s seat belt law during the Thanksgiving holiday week.
State and local departments will be targeting drivers and passengers who aren’t buckled up beginning Monday and running through the following Monday.
Authorities say seat belts save lives. Federal officials say nearly half of people killed in car crashes weren’t wearing seat belts.
The heightened enforcement will coincide with the usual beefed-up holiday patrols meant to discourage drunken driving, speeding, tailgating, cellphone use and other violations.
State police said last year’s Thanksgiving holiday week saw more than 500 accidents. Two people died. Troopers also reported more than 1,000 speeding violations, 51 arrests for driving under the influence and 363 tickets for seat-belt violations.
