Israeli Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman’s resignation over the response of Israel to massive Hamas rocket attacks was well overdue (“Israeli Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman resigns over Gaza cease-fire, making early elections likely,” Web, Nov. 14).

While the Israeli military has made every effort to avoid Palestinian civilian deaths in Gaza, Hamas has been indiscriminate in its attacks, causing deaths and continuing Israeli civilian trauma in its border towns. Bombing of Hamas military installations has given no relief from Hamas’ at-whim firing of a huge number of rockets into Israel.

Mr. Lieberman has protested the lack of substantial response to Hamas. I would suggest a tit for tat, namely for every rocket that lands in Israeli territory, the measured distance serve as a guide for retaliation. This would mean that if a rocket landed in Sderot, bombing in Gaza by Israeli military forces should be equal in distance into Gaza, whether civilians are present or not.

While this may sound extreme, measures to counter Hamas rocket attacks are long overdue and they should involve bombing equal areas of Gaza that border Israel.
