The Redskins plan to be cautious with Jonathan Allen after the defensive lineman missed 11 games last season with a foot injury.
Coach Jay Gruden said Allen, a 2017 first round pick, was fully healthy, but the Redskins limited Allen’s reps last Wednesday at OTAs.
In October, Allen had surgery to repair a Lisfranc sprain. He began working with trainers off to the side in late November, though was ultimately held out of the Redskins’ final two games.
“He’s just slowly working back into it, but just watching him in Phase 2, watching him in individual, he looks good,” Gruden said. “He’s 100 percent, but we’re still going to try to take care of his reps and monitor how much he’s doing to make sure he’s full-go for training camp. But I’m very pleased and anxious to see him get more work.”
A healthy Allen made his presence felt on the Redskins’ front line last season. He recorded only one sack, but with him in the lineup, Washington held opponents to just 88 rushing yards per game. That jumped to 155 rushing yards per game without him.
“When we lost Jonathan, things really seemed to kind of change, and that’s unfortunate because we do feel like we have a lot of depth in the room already,” linebacker Ryan Kerrigan said in April. “Jon was as advertised in how he played the run and how he played the pass and how he got after the passer, so his loss was huge.”
