MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. (AP) - Federal wildlife officials are investigating after South Carolina residents complained that a utility removed an osprey’s nest from a utility pole.

The Post and Courier of Charleston reported the nest was removed by a South Carolina Electric & Gas Co. crew last week.

The South Carolina Department of Natural Resources and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service told the newspaper a federal investigation is underway Federal officials would not talk about the investigation.

SCE&G spokesman Paul Fischer would not talk about the case but said lines are regularly inspected by crews that follow environmental regulations and guidelines.

Fisher said SCE&G works with state and federal agencies to manage situations where nesting material prevents routine maintenance on equipment needed to provide electric service.
