JACKSON, Miss. (AP) - A bill awaiting final debate would allow the state to create another parking lot near the Mississippi State Fairgrounds in Jackson.

The House passed Senate Bill 2854 Wednesday by a 118-1 vote. The bill would allow the state Department of Finance and Administration to purchase real estate between the fairgrounds and Interstate 55.

Two hotels and one restaurant are on the property. Legislators propose knocking them down to make room for a public lot in an area notoriously lacking in parking.

Rep. Adrienne Wooten, a Democrat from Jackson, noted that the city of Jackson will no longer receive local taxes from the land if it is owned by the state.

The bill returns to the Senate for a final vote before it can go to the governor.
