Texas Wesleyan University has told reporters it does not condone the comments made by its baseball coach in an email, saying he doesn’t recruit players from the state of Colorado because its players fail drug tests.

Mike Jeffcoat wrote in an email obtained by the Houston Chronicle that “you can thank your liberal politicians” for Coloradan players failing drug tests, presumably linking the issue to the state’s legalization of marijuana in 2012.

The university does not condone discrimination based on “political legislation of one’s home state,” according to a statement.

Besides the rebuke, it does not appear at this time that Jeffcoat faces a more formal punishment.

Texas Wesleyan’s athletic teams play in the NAIA rather than the NCAA. The school is located in Fort Worth, Texas.

Jeffcoat pitched for the Cleveland Indians, San Francisco Giants, Texas Rangers and Florida Marlins in a 10-year MLB career.
