CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) - A South Carolina town wants some money from the sale of its port.

The Post and Courier of Charleston reported the Beaufort County town of Port Royal wants 5 percent of the nearly $9 million the South Carolina State Ports Authority is receiving from the sale.

State lawmakers ordered the port in Port Royal to be sold in 2004 but it has taken 13 years to find a suitable buyer. The development group Grey Ghost Properties bough the site in September.

Port Royal says it needs money to help pay infrastructure for the long-delayed redevelopment of the site.

A state board in Columbia is to consider the town’s request for nearly $440,000.

The State Ports Authority plans to use proceeds from the sale for improvements at the Port of Charleston.
