SPOKANE, Wash. (AP) - A nonprofit veterans group has canceled an event that would have featured an appearance by former Arizona Sheriff Joe Arpaio.

The Spokesman-Review says Arpaio on Sunday tweeted the March 10 event in Spokane. On Monday evening, Spokane-based Gr8ter Veterans announced it was canceling the event and ending all affiliation with the former six-term sheriff of metro Phoenix.

The group’s founder Nick Richardson says the group decided that Arpaio “does not best reflect the views” of the group. He says the group did not want to divide the veterans’ community and also wanted to remain more apolitical.

Arpaio is an immigration hardliner who was pardoned by President Donald Trump last year after defying a judge’s order to stop traffic patrols that targeted immigrants.

He is running for the Republican nomination for the U.S. Senate seat being vacated by Republican Jeff Flake.
