ANGOLA, Del. (AP) - Delaware has confirmed the year’s first rabies case in a raccoon after it bit a human.
The News Journal in Wilmington reported Friday that the rabid raccoon attack occurred near Angola in Sussex County. The raccoon entered the person’s home through a pet door.
The person has started treatment for the bite. His or her pets had received rabies vaccinations but are under quarantine.
Rabies is an infectious disease that affects the nervous system and can’t be cured once symptoms appear.
Last year, the state confirmed 16 cases of rabid animals. They included five raccoons, six cats, two dogs, two bats and one fox. Six of the animals bit humans.
Health officials are warning people stay away from wild and feral animals.
