CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) - A man has pleaded guilty in South Carolina in the 2015 shooting death of a woman who investigators say was not the intended target.

The Post and Courier of Charleston reported 23-year-old Richard Dara Simmons pleaded guilty this week to murder and four counts of attempted murder in a shootout that killed 36-year-old Dena Brown in North Charleston.

Circuit Judge Roger Young delayed sentencing for Simmons. Charges are pending against six other people.

Police responded to a report that people in two cars were shooting at each other May 10, 2015. The vehicles became separated briefly and shooting resumed when a similar car was spotted a short time later. Brown was killed.

She was not connected to the dispute between the people in the two original cars.
