MESA, Ariz. (AP) - Authorities say three people were injured, including one seriously, in an explosion as workers transferred compressed natural gas at Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport in Mesa.

The Mesa Fire and Medical Department says the explosion occurred Wednesday morning at a backup ramp area and away from runways.

Officials say the explosion hasn’t affected the airport terminal or flight operations.

Additional information was not immediately available.

Phoenix-Mesa is located on the site of a closed Air Force base and serves as reliever airport for Sky Harbor International Airport in Phoenix. It hosts flights of Allegiant and WestJet airlines.
