CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) - State regulators have obtained a civil judgment against a company accused of abandoning at least 200,000 tires at a South Carolina recycling center.

The Post and Courier of Charleston reported the Department of Health and Environmental Control has obtained a $1.7 million judgment against Viva Recycling, whose Moncks Corner plant was closed last year.

DHEC spokesman Tim Kelly said the company has not contacted the state about paying the penalty or cleaning the site.

But Viva owner Marty Sergi told the newspaper a new company is interested and when their process is complete, they would work with DHEC on cleanup. Sergi did not name the company.

State officials say the site is an environmental and health threat because the tires could catch fire and are a breeding ground for mosquitoes.
