COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - The Democrat who lost a special election for South Carolina’s 5th District Congressional seat has more money on hand than the new incumbent.

The Post and Courier of Charleston reported that Democrat Archie Parnell of Sumter started the new year with $236,000 in the bank, based on a campaign finance report through the end of 2017.

Parnell raised almost $240,000 and added $100,000 of his own money to the campaign account.

Incumbent Republican Ralph Norman of Rock Hill had just over $100,000. Norman raised more than $82,000 in the last three months last year.

Norman defeated Parnell to win the seat given up by Rep. Mick Mulvaney when he went to work for President Trump.

The Democratic National Committee has added the race to its target list this year.
