CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) - A South Carolina city has collected about $25,000 in fines from those who have violated its new short-term rental rules.
The Post and Courier of Charleston reported the city’s Department of Tourism and Livability has collected that amount just since September. Charleston City Council approved new rules in April to regulate short-term rentals. Enforcement started this fall.
The rules came after local residents complained of renters using too many parking spaces or holding late-night parties.
The fine for violators is nearly $1,100.
Department director Dan Riccio said the city has collected money on 23 violations from 15 owners. City officials are processing another 62 cases.
Riccio says the number of online advertisements for short term rentals in Charleston has dropped by 800. He says most were taken down voluntarily.
