Cindy Timchal became the first lacrosse coach to win 500 career games at the NCAA Division I level when the Navy women’s team beat Holy Cross 19-7 on Saturday.
Timchal coached at Northwestern and Maryland before coming to Annapolis. At Maryland, where she stayed from 1991 to 2006, Timchal’s Terrapins won eight national championships and seven straight from 1995 to 2001.
Timchal has been the Midshipmen’s only head coach since their program was elevated to varsity status in 2008. She coached Navy on a surprise run to the Final Four in last year’s NCAA Tournament.
Timchal was happy to defer the congratulations and spotlight to her players, past and present, after Saturday’s win.
“Five-hundred wins are the players. All the losses are the coach,” she quipped.
Timchal is 164-45 at Navy since 2008.
Only two other coaches have 500 career wins, both at the Division III level. No Division I men’s coach has reached 500.
Navy is 9-2 overall and 4-0 in the Patriot League this season, tied for the league lead with Loyola.
