CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) - The South Carolina church where nine people were shot and killed more than two years ago is undergoing work to repair termite damage.
The Post and Courier of Charleston reports Emanuel AME Church in Charleston will be covered with tarps so it can be fumigated to kill termites.
Self-avowed white supremacist Dylann Roof has been sentenced to death for killing the pastor and eight church members in 2015 during a Bible study.
The work is expected to cost more than $1 million.
The church’s leaky roof was repaired earlier this summer. Roof damage by termites and rot is now the focus of the repair effort.
The Rev. Eric S.C. Manning says members are thankful they did not have to replace the entire roof.
Emanuel celebrates its bicentennial next year.
