Officials at the Pentagon have denied a claim by a former high-ranking Army official that more than 6,000 soldiers from Fort Carson, Colorado, will be deployed to Afghanistan.

Army Col. Pat Seiber said Thursday that no scheduled deployments are imminent for soldiers from Fort Carson’s 4th Infantry Division.

Patrick Murphy, who was acting secretary of the Army under former President Barack Obama, said in a speech at Fort Carson on Thursday that one brigade and a headquarters unit from the 4th Infantry Division were being deployed to Afghanistan.

Seiber said another brigade from Fort Carson will return home soon from a deployment in Europe.

A former high-ranking Army official says more than 6,000 soldiers from Fort Carson, Colorado, will be deployed to Afghanistan, but current officials haven’t confirmed the plan.

The Colorado Springs Gazette reports (https://bit.ly/2h4qj6A) that Patrick Murphy, who was acting secretary of the Army under former President Barack Obama, discussed the deployment in a speech at Fort Carson on Thursday.

Fort Carson spokeswoman Dani Johnson said the post hasn’t received any official notification of a deployment. She said she couldn’t comment further.

Murphy said an infantry brigade and the 4th Infantry Division headquarters unit were headed to Afghanistan.

It wasn’t clear if the soldiers would replace some of the 11,000 U.S. troops already there or would be among about 3,900 additional troops the U.S. plans to send.
