WILMINGTON, Del. (AP) - Hurricane Irma has stranded a local official from Delaware in the Caribbean.

The News Journal in Wilmington, Delaware, reported Sunday that New Castle County Councilman Bob Weiner is stuck on the island of St. Thomas.

Weiner said in a text message over the weekend that stores were shuttered or destroyed while conditions were getting worse. He said the roof blew off and water got into the unit where he was staying with his wife.

He and his wife were vacationing at Point Pleasant resort. He also said that no infrastructure was operative on island. He said helicopters were flying overhead but “providing no relief.”

The Hurricane hit the island as a Category 5 storm, killing at least 20 people on St. Thomas and St. Martin.
