NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) - More police officers in South Carolina’s third largest city are wearing body cameras.
The Post and Courier of Charleston reported the North Charleston Police Department said Thursday that 17 patrol lieutenants have started wearing body cameras, after a recommendation from an advisory board.
Sergeants and other officers working on the streets already wear body cameras, but lieutenants have not used the equipment.
The citizens’ advisory council recommended cameras for lieutenants after Lt. Richard Keys shot and killed a man suspected of robbing a store in June. Questions were raised in the shooting of 56-year-old Lawrence Heyward Jr.
Police spokesman Spencer Pryor said lieutenants started wearing the cameras Monday. Pryor said the department did not have to buy any additional cameras.
