COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (AP) - The NBA has hired the former head of the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado to run the basketball league’s referee operations.

The Gazette reports that the NBA on Thursday named retired Lt. Gen. Michelle Johnson as its senior vice president and head of referee operations.

NBA operations head Byron Spruell says Johnson has the experience and “the qualities to maximize the effectiveness of our officiating program.”

Johnson says the job was appealing because of her love of the sport and “the opportunity to help shape the direction of a key operational group.” She was in command of the academy for four years.

Johnson also has experience in basketball. Johnson who graduated from the academy in 1981 was the second-leading scorer in the history of the women’s basketball team.
