MANDAN, N.D. (AP) - Students in the central part of North Dakota have raised $1,400 to help their peers and others affected by Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico.
Members of foreign language clubs at Mandan High School held a bake sale and charged $1 for the cause, the Bismarck Tribune reported. They presented a check to the Red Cross of Western North Dakota’s disaster program manager, Rob Stotz, on Wednesday.
“I think this is fantastic,” said Stotz, adding that it shows initiative among the students.
He said the money will go directly toward aid in Puerto Rico.
The hurricane ravaged homes and left 3.4 million people on the island without electricity. About 30 percent of electricity has been restored, and efforts are ongoing.
Lucia Shelley, a teacher at the school, said her students that had family and friends in Puerto Rico had no idea how they were doing following the natural disaster.
Senior Solimar Gonzales is among the students whose families were affected by the hurricane. She said her grandmother “lost everything,” including her home and all of her belongings.
“We are really thankful and appreciate it. They worried about us and our families,” said Gonzales of the fundraising efforts.
Gonzales said her grandmother is planning to leave Puerto Rico and move to Boston to live with Gonzales’ aunt.
