The first trailer for the upcoming Marvel Studios blockbuster “Avengers: Infinity War” was released on Wednesday to the delight of fans across the world.

Social media platforms lit up this week as movie buffs caught a glimpse of a movie event nearly 10 years in the making. A story arc that began in 2008 with actor Robert Downey Jr.’s iconic turn in “Iron Man” in many ways comes to an end with the May 4, 2018, release of “Infinity War.”

“In time you will know what it is like to lose,” actor Josh Brolin says in the trailer while playing the cosmic villain Thanos. “To feel so desperately that you’re right, yet to fail all the same.”

The film, directed by Joe and Anthony Russo, is the 19th for Marvel Studios.

“There will be two distinct periods. Everything before [“Avengers 4” in 2019] and everything after,” Kevin Feige, Marvel Studios’ president, told Vanity Fair on Monday. “I know it will not be in ways people are expecting.”

The Marvel Studios franchise has generated over $13 billion in profit over the years for parent company Disney.
