San Juan Mayor Carmen Yulin Cruz chastised President Trump again Tuesday for his disregard for Puerto Rico, but praised efforts in the Senate to help bring much-needed funding to the island.
“The president has had a conduct frankly unbecoming of the leader of the free world,” Ms. Cruz said on CNN. “He has insulted the Puerto Rican people. He has disregarded our ability to rebuild and transform the island.”
Sen. Bernard Sanders on Tuesday released a recovery plan to help Puerto Rico not only rebuild after Hurricane Maria ripped through the island earlier this year, but to modernize its entire electrical system. Much of the island was left without power and clean drinking water supplies ran dangerously low in the wake of the storm.
The bill from the independent Vermont senator would allot $146 billion for Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands to rebuild and help prevent future storms from causing the same level of destruction.
“While dealing with all major areas of immediate concern — energy, health and education — it also sets the foundation to make Puerto Rico a more equitable, just and fair society for all,” Ms. Cruz said in a statement lauding the plan.
