TRENTON, N.J. (AP) - Birthdays might mean a trip to the Motor Vehicle Commission for some New Jersey drivers under legislation that is headed to Gov. Chris Christie’s desk.

The Democrat-led state Senate approved the legislation on Thursday, 39-0. The measure changes driver’s license expiration dates from the last day of the month every four years to the driver’s birthday.

The legislation got final legislative approval after the Republican governor suggested the change last year as a way to ease wait times at the state’s MVC offices.

The change was among a number of recommendations, including the elimination of online transaction fees, that Christie proposed in response to customer service complaints.

The Democrat-controlled Assembly approved the measure 74-0 in December.
