First lady Melania Trump on Friday opened the White House movie theater to public tours for the first time in history, giving visitors an added glimpse of the first family’s residence.
The move theater, which has been a White House luxury since 1942, was immediately opened for the self-guided tours Friday.
“The White House belongs to the people of this country,” Mrs. Trump said. “I believe everyone who takes the time to visit and tour the White House should have as much access to its rich history and wonderful traditions as possible. It is my hope that our visitors truly enjoy the newest piece of the tour.”
The East Terrace cloakroom was converted into a movie theater in 1942 under the direction of President Franklin Roosevelt.
The facility underwent a major renovation under President Reagan that was completed in 1983, introducing 51 seats in tiered rows. The latest renovation in 2004-2005 under President George W. Bush was inspired by theater interiors of the early 20th century.
To commemorate Friday’s opening, the White House Visitors Office passed out White House candy to children.
The White House Visitors Office oversees all public tours, and requests must be submitted through one’s Congress member. These self-guided tours are available from 7:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Tuesday through Thursday, 7:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays, excluding federal holidays and other specified occasions.
