Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin said Monday that the U.S. will continue to use sanctions against countries supporting terrorism or weapons of mass destruction.
“The sanctions are about making sure that, where people are supporting terrorist activities or weapons of mass destruction, that we’re cutting them off from the U.S. financial system, and we’re encouraging our partners around the world to do the same thing,” Mr. Mnuchin said on Fox Business.
“These are very, very important tools we have at Treasury,” he explained.
Mr. Mnuchin said this applies to North Korea as well.
“We have put sanctions on North Korea. We’ll continue to look at this, but the sanctions programs are very important to our national security,” he said.
The Treasury secretary declined to comment on specific sanctions against any particular country, including Russia.
