CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) - Some Charleston area residents are worried about Google’s request to pump more water to cool its computer servers near Moncks Corner.

The Post and Courier of Charleston reported (https://bit.ly/2nyBhUJ) several people at a hearing Wednesday urged state regulators to delay Google’s request until a study is complete of the state’s underground water supplies.

Six people spoke at the Department of Health and Environmental Control meeting. No one from Google addressed the gathering.

The company wants to draw 1.5 million gallons per day from an aquifer under the Charleston region. That would make Google the third-largest water user in the Charleston area.

DHEC hopes to complete a study of the underground water capacity by May. Critics say DHEC should wait until federal officials finish a separate study later this year.
