Rep. Jackie Speier, a member of the House Intelligence Committee, on Tuesday accused President Trump of trying to undermine the panel’s investigation into potential ties between Russian and the Trump campaign.
“I actually think there is an effort underway to shut this committee down by the president,” Ms. Speier, California Democrat, said on CNN’s “New Day.” “He does not want this committee’s investigation to move forward. If he can knock us off, then he only needs to find a way to knock off the Senate investigation.”
Ms. Speier also went further than some of her colleagues, saying Rep. Devin Nunes, the chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, should step down from the panel “in the interest of what we all care about, which is the integrity of our intelligence community and the integrity of our electoral process.”
“I don’t think he can just recuse himself and still chair the committee,” she said.
Mr. Nunes has come under fire following news reports that he viewed intelligence records on the White House grounds a day before he announced the documents showed Trump aides were incidentally caught up in surveillance by intelligence agencies.
