CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) - Nearly 30 people have been arrested in South Carolina as part of a two-year law enforcement operation that targeted armed narcotic traffickers.

The Post and Courier of Charleston reports the undercover operation began in September 2015 in rural areas of the county. Officers served multiple arrest and search warrants Thursday in the area of Rutt Lane in unincorporated Goose Creek in Berkeley County.

Sheriff Duane Lewis said the Rutt Lane area had been a problem area for many years. He said it was plagued by gun and drug violence for too long.

Beth Drake, U.S. attorney for South Carolina, said authorities have an active arrest warrant on a 28th suspect. Drake said 40-year-old Rico Reid of Moncks Corner is facing federal counts of heroin distribution and firearms charges.
