TRENTON, N.J. (AP) - Gov. Chris Christie says he has reached a bipartisan agreement on legislation to make it easier for some New Jersey residents to clear their minor criminal records.
Christie said Tuesday that he and Democratic Sen. Sandra Cunningham have agreed on a three-bill package that will help those dealing with drug addiction.
The bills would allow petitioners to expunge up to four offenses, instead of three. They also would reduce the waiting period from 10 years to six.
Another measure would change the waiting period for juveniles from five to three years.
Christie says the changes would give some residents a “second chance at life.”
The bills will have to go through the Democrat-led Assembly and Senate before heading to Christie, a Republican. Messages left Tuesday with leaders were not returned.
