BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - Gov. John Bel Edwards is among a bipartisan group of 11 governors who say U.S. Senate Republicans should end any effort to repeal the federal health care law and replace it later.

Louisiana’s Democratic governor was included in a joint statement saying the Senate Republican leadership’s proposal would leave millions of Americans without health insurance coverage.

U.S. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell doesn’t have enough votes to advance his plan to repeal the law. The governors say “the best next step” is a bipartisan approach aimed at fixing the unstable insurance markets.

In addition to Edwards, among those issuing the statement were the governors of Ohio, Montana, Nevada, Vermont, Colorado, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Alaska and Virginia. Five are Republicans, five are Democrats and one is an independent.
