Commerce Department wants to sell buildings at old Navy base

NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) - The state Commerce Department wants to sell four buildings on the old Navy base in North Charleston.

The Post and Courier of Charleston reported (https://bit.ly/2jQJctU) the Commerce Department bought the buildings in 2012 as part of a plan to develop a rail and trucking hub to serve a future port terminal at the old Navy base.

Commerce Secretary Bobby Hitt says the buildings are surplus property. Three of the buildings have office and warehouse space. Hitt says the sale requires that the buyer of the three buildings agree to buy the historic Power House, the most “prominent and architecturally significant” building at the old base.

The contract would require that the 108-year-old building be rehabilitated by a specific date.

Hitt says at least one possible buyer is interested.
