CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) - Some school districts around South Carolina are increasing recruiting efforts to attract teachers as they face a shortage in the classrooms.

The Post and Courier of Charleston reported (https://bit.ly/2jHWRDW) that a student from the Center for Educator Recruitment, Retention and Advancement shows more than 6,000 teachers did not return to their current jobs this year. That’s up 21 percent compared with the previous school year.

The study by the center at Winthrop University says the most common reason teachers did not return to their current jobs was to take a job at another school. A quarter of the teachers cited that reason for leaving their current jobs.

The Pee Dee and the Lowcountry had nearly half of the vacant teaching positions at the beginning of the school year.
