Vice President Mike Pence on Thursday told Conservative Political Action Conference attendees it’s “our time” to usher in a conservative vision for the country, and exalted President Trump as a “fighter” and “winner” who never quits or backs down.
“Men and women of the conservative movement — this is our time,” Mr. Pence said.
“I’m here today because of all of you, because of this conservative movement,” he said. “The harder work — the most important work — now lies ahead.”
“This the chance we’ve worked for so hard for so long to see,” he said. “This is the time to prove again that our answers are the right answers for America.”
“You have elected a man for president who never quits, he never backs down, he is a fighter, he is a winner,” Mr. Pence said, saying Mr. Trump will not stop fighting until he follows through on his campaign pledge to “make America great again.”
Mr. Pence said Mr. Trump has already delivered on assembling “the strongest conservative Cabinet in my lifetime, bar none,” touting the choices of Attorney General Jeff Sessions and Defense Secretary James Mattis.
He also said the administration is getting to work to repeal Obamacare, rebuild America’s military, and “hunt down and destroy” the Islamic State terrorist group.
Before Mr. Pence could even start speaking, he was greeted with cheers and a chant of “USA! USA!”
Mr. Pence was introduced by Chris Cox, executive director of the National Rifle Association’s legislative-lobbying arm.
Mr. Cox said he was presenting Mr. Pence with CPAC’s Charlton Heston Courage Under Fire award, designated to recognize individuals who have demonstrated “courage, strength of character, and backbone in defending conservative values and principles.”
