CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) - State insurance officials say enrollment in the Affordable Care Act is up this year.

The Post and Courier of Charleston reported (https://bit.ly/2lx9aU1) the South Carolina Insurance Department said Thursday more than 247,000 people enrolled in the program.

The report said only 79 percent of those people have paid their first month’s premium. Insurance department director Ray Farmer says those numbers could change depending on the number of people who make the first payment.

A federal report last week said just over 230,000 people had enrolled in South Carolina. That report did not say how many people had paid the first premium. A more detailed federal report is expected next month.

State officials say 98 percent of those enrolling this year are eligible for subsidies to help with payments.
