SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - U.S. Rep. Rob Bishop says he wants to reign in presidential executive orders but stopped short of criticizing any issued by President Donald Trump.
Bishop made the comments Friday morning while addressing Utah’s Legislature.
The Republican congressman declined to comment on the specifics of Trump’s controversial ban on travelers from seven predominantly Muslim nations, saying he didn’t want to speak about it while it was being challenged in court.
Bishop did appear to defend the ban by pointing out to Utah’s House of Representatives that the order was only temporary, which makes it different than other orders. He also said it’s only in place “until the Department of Homeland Security can come up with a vetting process.”
The current refugee vetting process includes multiple interviews and background checks with several agencies, including Homeland Security.
