DELAWARE CITY, Del. (AP) - The Delaware Department of Natural Resources has reprimanded a refinery for a shutdown of equipment that may have resulted in a large release of air pollutants.
The News Journal of Wilmington reports the department issued the formal reprimand to the Delaware City Refinery over the Aug. 21 shutdown of its fluid coking unit Nov. 16.
The violation notice says operators discovered a hole in the unit. The refinery said the shutdown wasn’t an emergency, but rather planned in advance. The department says the refinery thus failed to give proper notification of the shutdown.
This is the 12th time the refinery has violated a permit since the beginning of 2016.
Both the department and refinery owner PBF Energy say the matter is under review. No fine has been announced.
