TRENTON, N.J. (AP) - New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie has signed legislation barring a synthetic drug related to bath salts.
Christie signed the new law prohibiting alpha-PVP on Monday. The drug’s effects can include hallucinations, paranoia and hyper-stimulation. It’s sometimes known as “flakka.”
The new law comes as the Republican chairs the White House’s anti-opioid commission and as he dedicates his final year in office to fighting drug addiction.
The law makes manufacturing and distributing alpha-PVP punishable by a prison term of up to 10 years and a fine of up to $150,000, or both. Possession of one ounce or more carries a sentence of up to five years and up to $15,000 fine, or both.
The Drug Enforcement Administration in 2014 listed the drug on Schedule 1, which includes heroin, LSD and marijuana.
