BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) - A North Dakota student is trying to raise money to build a youth sports complex and recreation area in Cannon Ball on the Standing Rock Indian Reservation.

Dakota Eagle is an enrolled member of the Three Affiliated Tribes and grew up in Cannon Ball, a small community located on the Standing Rock Indian Reservation, The Bismarck Tribune reported.

“I feel like, if we can find a way to fill that need, we just have to do it,” said Eagle, a United Tribes Technical College student studying elementary education.

Eagle took her proposal to district officials and it developed into a plan to create the Cannon Ball Youth Sports Complex.

A group of local residents and construction crews recently tore out the old basketball court and leveled out an adjacent field for the volleyball court.

A GoFundMe page has been setup for the project. As of Friday, the project raised nearly 17,700. Eagle is aiming to raise about $48,000 to build a recreation area with picnic tables and shelters, as well as a playground, and possibly other amenities.

Eagle said she started a community service project to raise funds to replace the existing basketball court and build a volleyball court after recognizing the need for more for more places for youth to play sports.
