WILMINGTON, Del. (AP) - A police officer in Delaware has been suspended without pay following charges that he choked his girlfriend.

The News Journal of Wilmington reports 31-year-old Senior Cpl. Matthew A. Kucharski of the Wilmington Police Department was arrested Monday following a New Castle County police investigation into the June incident.

Court records show that Kucharski’s 39-year-old girlfriend, also a Wilmington police officer, called a co-worker to take her to the hospital, saying she’d fallen. She later told him Kucharski choked her during an argument. Investigators say she lost consciousness, causing facial wounds in the resulting fall that needed 10 stitches.

The couple’s 4-year-old son was present during the incident.

Kucharski has been charged with strangulation, third-degree assault and endangering the welfare of a child. It’s unclear if he has a lawyer.
