ISLE OF PALMS, S.C. (AP) - Crews are expected to soon start piling sand on a South Carolina beach resort that has suffered erosion.
The Post and Courier of Charleston reported that Isle of Palms Mayor Dick Cronin says the Wild Dunes area east of Charleston has needed sand for several years. Cronin said Hurricane Matthew last year made the problems worse.
Officials plan to repair 1.5 (2.5 kilometers) miles of the beach with the equivalent of 75,000 dump truck loads of sand.
Wild Dunes has lost shoreline that included golf course damage and ocean water under condominiums.
The work is expected to start in October and take about two months.
The city council voted 7-2 Tuesday to spend nearly $12 million on the effort.
The city’s last major beach nourishment was in 2008.
