CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) - A man has been sentenced to three years in prison for shooting and killing a South Carolina man in a dispute over taxes.

The Post and Courier of Charleston reported that 35-year-old Shatario Copeland of Charleston was sentenced under a deal with prosecutors in the June 4, 2016, shooting death of 32-year-old Karriem Mitchell.

Prosecutors who considered that Copeland might win a self-defense argument agreed to allow him to plead guilty to a voluntary manslaughter charge.

Copeland had been arrested in New York City.

Prosecutors say Copeland and Mitchell had argued over tax responsibility in some payments to the IRS. The dispute led to the shooting outside a convenience store.

Copeland will be eligible for release in 2019, counting credit for time served.
