CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) - A public-private elementary school venture in North Charleston has suspended more of their students than any other elementary school in Charleston County.

The Post and Courier reports (https://bit.ly/2oBhQLD) Meeting Street Elementary @Brentwood suspended one-quarter of its student body at least once in the 2015-2016 school year. Five percent of the suspensions were for physical violence or criminal offenses.

The school served students in kindergarten through second grade that year. Of the 10 district schools with the highest suspension rates, Brentwood was the only elementary school.

School officials say the lack of an in-school suspension program led to the high rate and the average length of suspension is less than other elementary schools.

The school expanded to include third grade this year and its suspension rate is currently at 14 percent.
