Newly elected Kansas Rep. Ron Estes said Thursday that President Trump and the Republican message remain very popular within his district despite the surprisingly close special election results Tuesday.
“I think there’s a lot of popularity still in the district for the president, but people did elect us to get things done, particularly with Republican majority,” the Republican congressman from Kansas’ 4th congressional district said on “Fox & Friends.”
Mr. Estes said his race was tighter than expected because of lower turnout in special elections and less independents coming out to vote, unlike former Republican Rep. Mike Pompeo’s huge win in the district last November.
“I don’t know that you can necessarily compare the two elections,” Mr. Estes said. “A November election where the president is on the ballot is much different than a special election where the turnout is very much lower.”
Mr. Estes said the race shows people want someone who can push the legislative agenda Republicans campaigned on including repealing and replacing Obamacare and reforming the tax code.
