DETROIT (AP) - Best-selling author Mitch Albom’s S.A.Y. Detroit charity is getting a 10-year, $5 million grant from the Masons to help provide literacy and tutoring support to thousands of youth and their families.
The funding for work centered on Detroit’s Lipke Park area is from the Michigan Masonic Charitable Foundation and was announced this week.
Albom is a Detroit Free Press columnist. He says in a statement: “The Masons are making a tremendous commitment to the future of Detroit’s kids.”
William Finkel, grand master of Michigan Masons, notes “too many Detroit children face the barriers of illiteracy and achieving their full potential.”
S.A.Y. Detroit stands for Super All Year Detroit. The S.A.Y. Play Center, which opened in 2015, is located at the site of a former recreation center.
