At the age of 19 years and 266 days, McDavid is the youngest captain in the history of the NHL, edging out the previous youngest captain in NHL history, Gabriel Landeskog of the Colorado Avalanche, by two days.
Drafted with the first-overall pick in 2015, McDavid recorded 16 goals and 32 assists in his rookie season. McDavid finished third in Calder Trophy voting for the NHL’s top rookie.
McDavid was limited to just 45 games after breaking his clavicle.
Additionally, the Oilers named forwards Milan Lucic, Jordan Eberle and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins as alternates.
McDavid has previously served as captain of the Erie Otters in the OHL, his junior level team and Team North America in the 2016 World Cup of Hockey.
